1. DBS Checks and Safeguarding Responsibility
Introduction
At Bay Veterans Association, the safety and wellbeing of all individuals we support—especially children, vulnerable adults, and adults at risk—is our highest priority.
Any volunteer or member of paid staff who is likely to come into contact with, support, or work directly with these individuals is required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before starting their role.
Why it Matters
This process helps us ensure that we are providing a safe, trustworthy environment for everyone. It also confirms that those working in sensitive roles are appropriately cleared and committed to safeguarding responsibilities.
We take this requirement very seriously. The DBS check is not just a legal formality—it's a vital part of our safeguarding culture, ensuring that everyone who interacts with those we support is properly vetted and understands the importance of working with care, respect, and integrity.
Who Needs a DBS Check
You will need a DBS check if:
- You are working in a role that involves regular contact with children or vulnerable adults.
- You support individuals who may be at risk due to age, health, or circumstance.
- You are volunteering or working at events where safeguarding responsibilities apply.
If you're unsure whether your role requires a DBS check, please speak to your supervisor or the Safeguarding Lead.
What You Need to Do
- We will guide you through the DBS application process.
- You must not begin unsupervised work in a regulated role until your DBS clearance is confirmed.
- We maintain strict confidentiality and data protection in line with legal requirements.
Ongoing Responsibility
Even after obtaining a DBS certificate, all staff and volunteers are expected to:
- Follow our Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct at all times.
- Report any concerns or safeguarding issues immediately.
- Undertake refresher training if required.
Closing
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you for helping us ensure Bay Veterans Association remains a safe and trusted space for all who rely on our support.
